Things to Remember

  • Non-owner car insurance policies provide minimum coverage required by the state, as well as optional add-ons
  • Most major insurance companies offer non-owner car insurance
  • Many insurers will not write a non-owner policy if a driver has access to a vehicle in their household

For drivers who don’t own a vehicle, but still need insurance to drive a car, non-owner car insurance is a great option. This type of auto insurance is for people who don’t have their own a vehicle but still need to drive one once in a while.

These policies are especially great for coverage during car rentals while on vacation or shared vehicles during work trips. These policies will keep you covered under most circumstances that an accident can happen under and whether you are found at fault or not.

Checking the factors that affect auto insurance rates will be your first step into figuring out if non-owners car insurance is right for you. Depending on your insurer and your state, this also might be a requirement even if you borrow a car from a non-relative.

What are the best auto insurance companies for drivers who don’t own a car?

Each company has its pluses and minus but these three, some of the biggest in the country, are ones you will probably see in your search.

Progressive Auto Insurance

Progressive non-owner car insurance rates will vary based on your situation. This company is an excellent investment for drivers who frequently borrow or rent cars, or for those who need to file an SR-22 or FR-44 with their state to prove they have insurance.

Progressive does only offer their non-owner car insurance to already existing members, so you’ll have to buy a regular auto insurance policy before qualifying for a non-owner’s car insurance rate.

Other add-on’s that Progressive offers:

  • Hired Auto coverage: provides liability protection when you’re driving a hired, leased, rented or borrowed vehicle
  • Any Auto coverage: provides liability protection for all vehicles on a policy whether they are owned, non-owned, or hired, including vehicles that you purchase during your policy even if you forget to tell your insurance company

For Progressive, you are able to carry non-owner coverage along with Hired Auto coverage. Any Auto coverage is already included with non-owned coverage, so these two cannot be purchased together.

GEICO Auto Insurance

Non-owner car insurance for GEICO looks a little bit different. Unlike Progressive, with GEICO, you don’t need to be an existing customer to qualify for a non-owner’s car insurance policy.

GEICO does not provide non-owner quotes online, so you will have to call a licensed agent to find out how much a non-owner insurance policy will cost for your particular circumstances.

GEICO also offers help with reinstating your driver’s license through SR-22 or FR-44 certificates, as well as being able to file these forms on your behalf so that you can get back on the road quicker. This works even if you don’t have your own car yet, as well.

Your age, vehicle condition, and driving history, along with other typical factors that include pre-existing policies, ability to bundle, and other outside circumstances, will affect GEICO non-owner policies.

State Farm Auto Insurance

State Farm is a great option if you do not have a clean driving record, or are a teen driver. They offer affordable rates for these kinds of individuals compared to Progressive and GEICO who penalize drivers with their higher rates.

State Farm also offers additional coverage if needed beyond non-owner’s insurance.

Other add-ons that State Farm offers that help cover additional costs:

  • Uninsured motorist coverage (UM): This coverage pays for medical expenses if someone crashes into you and they don’t have liability insurance or not enough. Uninsured motorist coverage can also cover hit-and-run accidents, depending on your state
  • Medical payments (MedPay): This coverage pays your passengers’ medical bills no matter who caused the accident

With MedPay, State Farms only offers coverage to those who are affected if you get into an accident. This coverage will pay for their:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost wages

MedPay does not cover your personal injuries, only those that are involved in the accident with you.

How does non-owners car insurance work?

Like standard liability insurance, these types of policies cover vehicles damaged during an accident or injuries that are sustained by other people when you are at fault. Per the NAIC, all drivers must have, at a minimum, liability or non-owners insurance in order to get behind the wheel.

Since non-owner insurance policies don’t cover any specific vehicle, they will also not include collision and comprehensive coverage, meaning that any damage sustained while driving someone else’s car, you will end up paying out of pocket for your repairs if needed.

These policies will do not cover any personal medical bills or injury-related costs due to an accident.

Most national insurance companies do offer non-owner car insurance policies, so it is easy to compare multiple companies and figure out which one best fits your needs.

How To Get Non-Owners Car Insurance

Searching for the best auto insurance companies for drivers who don’t own a car insurance rates will vary depending on a few factors.

This coverage is usually less expensive than a typical full-coverage policy, as insurers view those who don’t own a car as less risky because they don’t have regular access to it. Finding the best non-owner car insurance, while keeping these things in mind, will help to find which fits in with your needs.

Other factors will include:

  • The amount of liability insurance coverage you want
  • Your driving history
  • Your state/county

High-risk auto insurance might be required if your insurance company deems you as high-risk. Your non-owner policy will likely cost you more than it would for someone with a clean record.

Some companies unfortunately will refuse to insure high-risk drivers for this specific policy type if you do not already have an existing policy with them, so researching which companies offer bad driving record auto insurance can make this process easier in the long run.

Which non-owner car insurance is right for me?

Figuring out which are the best auto insurance companies for drivers who don’t own car insurance quotes is certainly going to depend on factors such as age, the state you live in, and what kind of vehicle you plan on borrowing or using while you have this policy.

Other key factors include your driving history (DUIs, speeding tickets), and your credit history (if you have a poor credit history, or have ever declared bankruptcy, then that’s a sign that you might be a risk to cover). Because of all this, it is important to shop around to get the best coverage.

Non-owner car insurance is certainly cheaper than a regular auto policy that has full coverage, but you need to remember that it will only cover other people and you will need to pay out of pocket for your own expenses if you find yourself in an accident.

Progressive, GEICO, and State Farm all offer unique policies that are able to fit specific needs that you might find you require when searching for insurance. So be sure to carefully consider your circumstances before buying any of these policies.
