Things to remember...

  • Instacart does not offer its auto insurance coverage to delivery drivers when they are on the clock
  • Instacart drivers must have auto insurance that meets their state’s minimum liability requirements
  • Delivery drivers should consider purchasing a commercial auto insurance policy for adequate protection

If you work for Instacart, you must have an auto insurance policy. But while other employers, such as DoorDash, might offer their employees some of the best commercial auto insurance, Instacart does not.

Instacart delivery drivers are not required to carry high levels of coverage on their vehicles. However, since there is no Instacart insurance, Instacart delivery personnel have to find auto insurance coverage that offers enough protection on their own.

Is there such a thing as Instacart auto insurance?

Instacart does not offer commercial auto insurance coverage to its drivers. But anyone wishing to become a full-service shopper for Instacart must have access to a vehicle to make deliveries.

The Instacart website does not specify that delivery drivers must have auto insurance. The only requirements listed by the company are:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Have consistent access to a vehicle and a smartphone
  • Be able to lift up to 50 pounds

Since the company does not technically require its employees to own a vehicle, it does not require them to carry insurance. But anyone who owns a car in the U.S. must have liability coverage to drive legally.

While all you need to drive legally is liability insurance, many people especially people who drive a lot for work purchase additional coverage options to ensure they are protected if they’re ever in an accident.

Should I get more coverage as an Instacart driver?

If you’re looking for Instacart insurance, you should consider purchasing more than your state’s liability requirements for car insurance.

Many people add collision and comprehensive coverage to their auto insurance policies. Collision coverage helps to protect your vehicle if you’re in an accident, even if you’re at fault. And comprehensive coverage helps with things like theft, vandalism, and damage due to inclement weather.

People often choose not to purchase additional vehicle insurance coverage because of the cost. While comprehensive and collision coverage or a full coverage policy, when you add them together are extremely helpful, they can also be expensive.

The table below shows the average annual liability rates versus the average annual full coverage rates in each state.

As you can see, the difference between a liability policy and a full coverage policy can be several hundred dollars. Unfortunately, this keeps many people from purchasing additional coverage on their vehicles.

Should delivery drivers get business insurance?

Some delivery drivers, especially people who are full-time delivery personnel or who deliver relatively expensive goods, choose to purchase commercial auto insurance policies on their vehicles.

Commercial auto insurance is a great safety net for anyone who drives a car for work because the policy includes coverage that helps protect them from any sort of liability associated with an accident and its effects. Otherwise, drivers could be on the hook to pay for damages to property or injuries to other drivers.

If you do not drive for Instacart full time but are wondering whether you need business car insurance as a part-time driver, you may want to review your car insurance policy for guidance.

Will my personal auto insurance coverage help me when I’m making deliveries?

Many insurance companies do not allow someone’s car insurance policy to cover them if they drive for business purposes. So your car insurance policy may not be beneficial if you’re in an accident.

Many people who only use their cars for business a few hours a week purchase a business use add-on for their insurance policies.

Some insurance companies offer this add-on for coverage on a personal policy. Still, most companies stipulate how seldom you have to use your vehicle for work purposes to qualify for coverage.

Contact your insurance provider if you are an Instacart delivery person but only work 10-20 weekly for the company. You may be eligible for different options regarding commercial or business coverage.

The Bottom Line: Instacart Auto Insurance

Anyone who drives for Instacart needs auto insurance. You only have to meet your state’s liability requirements to drive legally. Still, it would be best if you considered purchasing additional coverage to ensure you and your vehicle are protected in an accident.

Auto insurance rates fluctuate from one company to the next. So your best bet for finding affordable car insurance is shopping online and comparing quotes from multiple companies.
